The Candlelight Club: Havana 1920s

Ever heard of The Candlelight Club? Don’t worry only a few select few have but now is your chance to dip your toe back into the 1920s… Allow us to fill you in: The Candlelight Club is a clandestine pop-up cocktail bar in a secret London venue, a stunning, tucked-away den with a 1920s speakeasy flavour, and as the name would suggest completely lit by candles! Each party offers a one-off cocktail menu, with special themes, plus dancing to live 1920s jazz bands and ‘vintage DJing’ – yes that’s a real thing.

Sounds great right? We thought so too so last Friday we dusted off the ol’ 3 piece, grabbed a couple of stogies (Bolivar Tubos No. 2 and H.Upmann Junior Corona to be exact) and headed to, well we can’t say as its held in a secret location (and we’d have to kill you if we told you…) Don’t worry though without the fear on a impending end ticket holders will receive an email a couple of days before the event giving exact directions, entry the password and we’re told cops have been bribed, so thats good then!

The evening we attended was based around Havana and it really felt like you’d been whisked back to Cuba in the 20s! Everyone looked the part, the band were brilliant and [most importantly] the barmen were mixing up some classic cocktails – daiquiri, cuba libre to name but a few!

With cocktails flowing and the cigars smoked (the Bolivar Tubos No. 2 being one of our favourite smokes of the year – Fresh to begin with and then halfway through it really started to kick in heavy complex floral flavours with cocoa undertones. Beautiful wrapper, well constructed, and even burn made this one of the great cigars!) we hit the dance floor and we weren’t alone… For all you single guys out there, well, lets just say choice was not short.

So what you need to know:

Dress Code: 1920s dandies and flappers, gangsters and molls, degenerate aristos, decadent aesthetes, corrupt politicians and the Smart Set In the Know tends to go down well.

Doors open 7pm and you’re thrown you out at midnight!

Table reservations are available for group but mostly is operated on a first come first serve basis.

Cash bar and you must be up for a good time.

So you like what you read and want to experience things for yourself?! Well you’re in luck (if you’re available on June 29th)…

Believe it or not it’s been three years since the Candlelight Club started, in a basement too tiny even for a band, bringing speakeasy chic to an in-the-know crowd. So before they break for the summer they’re having a special Anniversary Ball, in a bigger venue that usual, a 1920s ballroom!

There will be dancing to hot jazz from tireless Candelight regularsBenoit Viellefon and his Orchestra,

There will be balletic burlesque from the luminous Vicky Butterfly—the very first performer ever to appear at the Candlelight Club (see left).

There will be a cocktail menu, this time featuring favourites from our previous events over the last three years.

There will be Michael Marks’ vintage photo studio on site ready to capture you in all your 1920s finery. (High quality prints will be for sale, framed or unframed, which our photographers will dispatch to your home address within 48 hours.)
