Everyone at Cut The Cap towers is just a little bit excited as The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund and Pathé have announced that TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the Royal and European Premiere of the highly anticipated film MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM!
Stars of the film, Golden-Globe winner Idris Elba (Nelson Mandela) and Naomie Harris (Winnie Mandela), as well as BAFTA-winning director Justin Chadwick and Nelson Mandela’s daughter Zindzi Mandela, will meet TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the evening.
Trustees and beneficiaries of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF) will also be presented to Their Royal Highnesses at this prestigious annual fundraising event. The Royal Film Performance has been supported by members of the Royal Family since 1946 when King George VI attended the premiere of “A Matter of Life and Death”, in Leicester Square.
This year’s event takes place on Thursday 5th December at the Odeon Leicester Square and there is some cracking news… a limited number of tickets are on sale to the general public through the CTBF fundraising department, www.ctbf.co.uk. Also benefiting from this year’s event is The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. As Mr Mandela’s charitable legacy for children, The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund is committed to creating a better future for children in South Africa (www.mandela-children.org.uk).
This epic motion picture spans Mandela’s extraordinary life, from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected President of South Africa. MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM is the thrilling story of an ordinary man who rose to the challenge of his times and triumphed – an intimate portrait of the making of a modern icon.

The trailer makes the hair on the back of our neck stand-up every time we watch. This has all the ingredients to be a very powerful and moving film.
MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM was made with the full support and endorsement of Mr Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory. Mr Mandela entrusted his life story to South African producer Anant Singh in the face of fierce competition from the major international studios. Singh spent 16 years developing the film, teaming up with David Thompson and finally commencing principal photography of this UK-South African co-production in May 2012.
MANDELA is directed by BAFTA-winner Justin Chadwick (The First Grader, The Other Boleyn Girl) and stars Golden Globe winner Idris Elba (The Wire, Prometheus) as Nelson Mandela and Naomie Harris (Skyfall, Pirates of the Caribbean) as Winnie Mandela. Double Academy Award-nominee William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Miserables) has written the screenplay. It is produced by Anant Singh of Distant Horizon (the Oscar-nominated Yesterday; Sarafina!; Cry, The Beloved Country) and by David M. Thompson of Origin Pictures. Executive Producers for Pathé are Cameron McCracken and Francois Ivernel.
We know, quite an incredible line up and one that we’re sure will deliver something special.
MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM is released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 3 January, 2014.
